The title itself speaks for the main characters, titular characters to be exact. A delinquent boy and a glasses girl. The thing is, they make one of the best tandems that can be seen in a shounen read. Though labeled as romance, I see them more as a comical duo than a romantic couple.
Yankee-kun to Megane-chan’s storyline is just like the rest of what you see in shounen genres with students with monstrous strength as the cast and encompassing comedy and action. Fighting against different gangs, befriending some, failing exams and…
being a student council officer, now this is what I want to see.
Imagine the situation of you, being a male and is currently enjoying his solitary break in a toilet cubicle. Just to skip classes or maybe to take a dump. Then suddenly you see a girl with glasses looking at you from above the cubicle and this is what Shinagawa Daichi experiences in his not-so-normal days in his highschool. The girl is known as Adachi Hana, a class representative who looks like the average nerd type in the class but is otherwise. The story follows them throughout their thrilling school days in Monshiro high.
What is there to expect in Yankee-kun to Megane-chan? You see, the story focuses not only the comedic fundamentals which has been present in most of the shounen gag mangas published but also, as with the student council setting and ridiculous rivalries between gangs, certain ties between various characters are created.
The story flow can be easily grasp by the readers. It presently shows sheer depth and is meant for lighter reading purposes. Yankee-kun to Megane-chan has many similarities to many mangas in which it often repeats the meeting-a-delinquent-then-insertscenariohere-befriending-them or beating-up-a-whole-gang cycle. Whether the story stays as it is, it definitely would still pick up the interest of the readers. But we need more than this don’t we?
Ideally, the main characters who composes the student council gives more energy to its readers. Various personalities, ideas and idiocy. The way they portray their own set of gags shows individualism amongst them. Therefore, being a set, they make a good laugh. Another point would be their strong bond despite of arguing in decision making. Supporting one another in times of crisis. They are under Adachi after all. Who makes a great leader regardless of her low grades and verdicts. She always decides by looking up whether everyone would be happy after or not.
The art is in its standards. With stereotypical and exaggerated expressions, character designs and background. The tones and shadows gives more emphasis and concentration. Truly, this is something suitable for a comical highschool gone mad theme.
And of course, this is in particular in Daichi’s point of view. With his level of idiocy intact, his narration is surprisingly enjoyable to follow. Though he acts like the king of the hill and argues with his co-officers most of the time, he actually has a soft spot for them but still acts differently. A perfect example of an oranyan/male tsundere.
If you are a person who enjoys shounen with a lot of comedy, action and character-focused themes, a lot of titles will doubtlessly please you. One of the top recommended will be Yankee-kun to Megane-chan which assures a favourable read just for you.
