Honey and Clover

A story that blankets a wide span of genres such as Romance, Slice of Life, Josei, Drama and Comedy. A tale told through many perspectives by different people who experiences the bitterness and sweetness of life. Not knowing what lies at the end of the road, making mistakes, meeting people, falling in love and getting confused in decision making. Something like Honey and Clover.

This anime follows the ups and downs of the four main characters who are art students. It starts as soon as Takemoto Yuuta the main protagonist, narrate about where he lives, in an apartment where most students occupy and introducing his two closest friends who lives in the same place, Mayama Takumi and Morita Shinobu. It succeeds wherein their art professor, Hanamoto Shuuji introduces his cousin’s daughter,Hanamoto Hagumi who will be transferring to their art school. At that moment, both Shinobu and Yuuta were captivated by Hagumi, but treats her in different ways. Shinobu often teases and makes Hagumi wear weird costumes and takes pictures of her while posting it in random websites while on the other hand Takemoto treats Hagumi like of a father to his child. It seems that he thinks of Hagumi very fragile and is easy to break so he concludes that he doesn’t need to make a move but to look at her from afar. Mayama in some point decides to observe Takemoto as his love grows fonder towards Hagumi. And to this point, the story goes vast.

Since this covers slice of life it didn’t fail to bring up to its viewers how each and every character feels in many aspects. It would make you think that as a young being, every decision may become fatal. Here comes the fact that people regardless on who they are are not meant to be alone. Friends and family are a big part in every decision you make in your life.

I would at least say that the most enticing asset would be that for every character there can be atleast a handful of viewers that can relate to them. I can say that Yamada Ayumi is the best female character in this series. Even though she has no hope for her love towards Mayama she still manages to get a grip of herself and makes a step forward. Holding on to her feelings and keeping them unrequited. Takemoto as the best for the male counterpart. Though both of them experiences unreciprocated love, their views are of a different light.

The persona of every character got more and more interesting as the story goes on. Takemoto, even as a young adult would sometimes ponder on what he really wants to be. He may seem to act childish based on his narration, but in reality most of us are like him. We grab opportunities head on without realizing the consequences. Shinobu has the most complex character. In some points he seems to be unreliable, comical and random. But in fact, he’s more capable of seeing things in a more complicated way. He treasures his friends more than himself. The closest person for him would be Takemoto in spite of the treatment he gives towards him. Mayama has the most serious figure in the batch because of the way he reacts to things nonetheless he becomes vulnerable when it comes to his manager, Rika Harada, the person he’s inlove with. Hagumi, creates an impression of a child who is needing someone to depend on and this someone is Shuuji, the fatherly figure of hers since childhood and is a man who always takes Hagumi into consideration for every decision he makes. The more complicated a character becomes the more it makes the story engulfing.

The art was simply enticing. You may even compare to it as a piece found in a museum. With the pastel colors and depth, both characters and sceneries looked realistic. Even the most minor of all things were given attention. The depicting of different elements such as the ferris wheel, bike and four leaf clover are concentrated on how a character relates to it. Moments wherein the ferris wheel takes place, Takemoto, Hagumi and Shinobu in the same cab and at the same time, Mayama and Ayumi together. Here we see that in a character riding a ferris wheel, their point of views differ. They may see it only as an amusement ride or something that goes around and around while the cab your riding on gets high and gets low and comparing it to life and love.

Family issues has also been given a spotlight. The character’s relationships towards them, how close and separated they may be and how they deal with personal problems with them.

The music used were accordant to the characters and the mainstream. The tones and lyrics of each soundtrack were a good choice. The piano themes gives off a good feel in a scene and is not as abrupt; keeping it low for the viewers to concentrate on the storyline.

Looking at the backstage of our lives, we may see our faults turn into springboards towards our new way of life. Advancing ourselves by crossing over our comfort zone and leaving our security blankets instead of going around by circles. Experience a life beyond dreams and hardships with Honey and Clover.
